In short

- We collect data when you comment, register, or log in — plus cookies that remember those choices.
- You can ask for a copy of your data, or ask us to erase it, at any time.
They are marked on this page so the gaps are visible. The policy should not be considered complete until they are written.

What personal data we collect and why
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor's IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address (a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside it.
Media
If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download and extract location data from images published here.

Embedded content from other websites
Articles may include embedded content such as videos, images or articles. Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you had visited that site: it may collect data about you, set cookies, embed third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with it — including if you are logged in to that site.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely, so follow-up comments can be recognised and approved automatically rather than held in a moderation queue.
For registered users we also store the personal information given in the user profile. All users can see, edit or delete their personal information at any time, except their username. Site administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can ask for an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including anything you gave us. You can also ask us to erase it.
Receive a file of everything we hold about you.
Ask us to delete your personal data.
Edit your profile yourself at any time.
Erasure does not cover data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
